Like Solstice, Sky has rear-wheel drive, 4-cylinder engines, and a manual-folding soft top with a heated-glass rear window.

Of course, there are 8 Skys that were built in 2010, though none of those are reported to be Red Lines. Of the 34,407 Skys built between 20, just 11,132 were Red Lines. It is the Red Line that car collectors of the future will be seeking out. The Red Line also boasted unique-though not larger-wheels than the base Sky, as well as a sport suspension and unique trim elements.

Both the GT and G2X were virtual clones of the Sky, save for grille inserts and minor fascia-trim tweaks.Īn analog for the sporty Pontiac Solstice GXP, the Sky Red Line swapped its mild 2.4-liter 4-cylinder (GM code LE5) for a turbocharged 2.0-liter four (LNF) that was good for 260 horsepower-a solid 87-horse bump over the 2.4. The Sky was a mechanical twin to the Pontiac Solstice, though it enjoyed unique bodywork and cabin appointments. Both of these two-seat convertible sports cars were built on GM’s purpose-built Kappa rear-drive small-car architecture, which also underpinned the European-market Opel GT and Asian-market Daewoo G2X. One car that probably deserved a little more mourning time than it got was the Saturn Sky, especially the performance-oriented Saturn Sky Red Line. GM’s Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn nameplates were all mostly ghosts by the 2010 model year. The General Motors bankruptcy that came-at least in part-as a result of the 2007-2009 Great Recession wiped out a slew of established car brands, and all of the models those brands retailed. The Red Line used to retail at $29,795 when it was new, and the LNF engine used to develop 260 horsepower or 290 horsepower with the upgraded turbo.There wasn’t time to mourn them all.
So what makes the Red Line different from the bog-standard model? The Sky in this specification features a limited-slip diff, sports suspension, and a few aesthetic garnishes such as stainless-steel pedals and dual exhausts. Alas, the Australian market didn’t get it either. Vauxhall didn’t get a successor to the Lotus Elise-based VX220 because the Wilmington plant in Delaware didn’t have the means to produce right-hand-drive vehicles. Turning our attention back to the car, the Sky is nothing more than a sibling to the Pontiac Solstice, and over in Europe, these bad boys were marketed as the Opel GT. The Gen III is available in a few variants, including the LTG in the Camaro and LSY in the Cadillac XT4. The funny thing about the 2.0-liter engine in the Saturn Sky is that Lotus - once the arch-rival of Ferrari on the track - did much of the development work in the United Kingdom for General Motors. The problem is, opening the hood reveals a plastic engine cover that reads EcoTec, SIDI, and turbo.
Silver racing stripes, Prancing Logo patches on the headrests, yellow piping on the seats, and the Ferrari logo on the steering wheel also bring the point home. Looking through the ad, the seller says that we’re dealing with a “one-of-a-kind customized car” and “a Ferrari prototype.” A bit suspicious when you think about it, but still, who wouldn’t be fooled by shiny exhaust tips glued to the front fenders, four on each side of the vehicle? It must be a Ferrari, right? “Wait, are you serious? $34,900 is Mercedes-Benz GLA money!” Searching for a similar model on Kelley Blue Book, the fair market range for this type of vehicle is $9,048 to $11,513.
